Maritha with her two of her grandchildren, Finn & EoghanMaritha Burmeister grew up across the river from New York City in Bloomfield, N.J. Soon after graduating from college she married a Texan and moved to San Antonio,Texas. She recieved a Ph.D. in genetics from the University of Texas at Austin; was a scientist for a number of years; and then became a college adminstrator. Today, she devotes all her time to writing and spending time with her grandchildren. The inspiration for this book came during a visit to her grandchildren living in New York City's Greenwich Village.

"As any visitor quickly learns, New York City is dog country," Maritha says of her inspiration for the story. "That struck home one afternoon as I hurried to a children's play with my five-year old granddaughter in tow. She stopped to pet every dog we met. Finally, I had to negotiate, saying 'You can pet all the dogs you want on our way home, but if we stop to pet them all on the way, we'll miss the play.' We got to the play on time...and that evening I wrote this story."

Maritha lives in San Antonio, Texas with her husband, Charles, and her cat, Cleo.
